Wartime Quid Pro Quo

Quid pro quo (1942)
If I should turn the wireless on
I know what I should hear -
A rousing patriotic song
That shatters every ear.

"There'll always be an England,"
"This is worth fighting for;"
Both these and many others
We've heard so much before.

I'm sorry for civilians
Who have no chance for fight.
No chance to do route marches;
Guards; and patrols at night.

So just to cheer their blighted lives
And really make their day,
We'd swap our patriotic songs
If we could have their pay.
