Sonnet

I know now what it felt like when the sun
Sent first his radiance over sleeping earth
To say "Awake, awake! Day has begun"
And earth stirred from forgetfulness to mirth,

As birds in song carolled the early hours
And lambs and all young things gambolled in play,
Soft fleecy clouds began their race, and flowers
Opened their golden eyes to greet the day.

All nature echoed with the sweet refrain
And ancient trees, in whom the sap moved slow,
Rustled their leaves in whispers, young again
In all the morning's glory; this I know!

And now I walk on stars because you smiled;
Head in the clouds, and heart with song beguiled.
